Craniosacral therapy is a branch of osteopathic medicine based on the microanatomical study of the skull and its bony, vascular, and nervous components, in connection with the sacrum and the bones of the pelvis.
It was coined by Dr. Sutherland, who experimented on the disarticulated skull and on himself to see how mechanical tensions in the skull modify the joints, the bones, and consequently their function.
HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?
During the first session, the patient’s symptoms and clinical history are analyzed.
This is followed by a careful observation of the cranial sutures, any bony asymmetries, and the intrinsic mobility of these structures based on craniosacral mechanics.
The sutures are considered as joints; therefore, their mobility, elasticity, and relationship with adjacent nervous and vascular structures are evaluated.
The osteopath will be able to perform a treatment that is painless yet effective, both immediately and in the long term for chronic issues.
In newborns, this approach also allows for the modification of the shape of a developing skull that is not yet fully ossified, but cartilaginous.
In fact, the benefits of the cranial approach in newborns are significant and widely documented in scientific literature.
