Dr. Still, the founder of osteopathy, coined the idea of lesion, meaning obstruction in the flow of bodily fluids, primarily referring to bone structures and particularly to the spine.
Over time, this concept was developed as somatic dysfunction, which encompasses all the characteristics of something that is not functioning perfectly: changes in tissue, structure, and the anatomical position of the affected area.
Still was fascinated by the technology and mechanism of the Industrial Revolution and by Newton’s laws, which described a perfect system of forces.
Similarly, Still describes the human body as a perfect and delicate machine, and the osteopath as the mechanic who analyzes the machine to correct or adjust it from tension, stress, and variations in functioning, in order to restore a fine balance so that health may re-emerge.
The effects of dysfunction therefore show altered metabolism, increased and often disturbed motor and secretory activity accompanied by stagnation.
The long-term effects are inflammation and degeneration of organs and tissues, caused by joint restrictions, poor habits, anxiety, emotional disturbances, and incorrect diet.
From this perspective, not only can prevention be carried out for numerous diseases, but osteopathic treatment addresses inflammation, posture, and trauma that can have lingering effects for years.
